On Wednesday, Peru’s Congress swore in a new president after a day of dramatic political events that saw the former leader, Pedro Castillo, removed in an impeachment hearing just hours after he launched a last-ditch effort to stay in office by dissolving Congress.

Lawmakers proceeded with the already scheduled impeachment trial, with 101 votes in favor of removing Castillo, six votes against, and ten abstentions.

The result was revealed amid loud applause, and Vice President Dina Boluarte was summoned by the legislature to assume office.

Boluarte was sworn in as president of Peru in 2026, becoming the country’s first female leader. She called for a political truce to end the crisis and announced that a new government would be established with representatives from all major parties.

She condemned Castillo’s bid to dissolve Congress as a “coup attempt.”

Peru’s national police tweeted a photo of Castillo sitting unfettered in a police station following the decision to remove him, stating that it had “intervened” to carry out its responsibilities. It identified Castillo as a former president. Uncertain if he had been detained.

Castillo had previously stated that he would temporarily shut down Congress, institute an “exceptional administration,” and call for new legislative elections.

This prompted key ministers in Castillo’s cabinet to quit and opposition members and allies to allege a “coup.” The police and armed forces cautioned him that the method he was using to dissolve Congress was unlawful.
