  • Her book delves deeper into what she terms the “black box” of Chinese politics.

Thursday at 7:30 p.m., local China specialist and UC San Diego professor Susan Shirk will discuss her new book “Overreach: How China derailed its peaceful growth” at the La Jolla bookstore Warwick’s.

In light of escalating tensions between China and the United States, Shirk’s book delves deeper into what she terms the “black box” of Chinese politics.

“I think it’s important to dig down and try to penetrate the secrecy of Chinese internal politics and decision making so we can ascertain how threatening is it really, and are we dealing with China in the right way, or are we overreacting,” Shirk said.

Thursday on Midday Edition, Shirk discussed her book and the latest Covid lockdown protests in China.
