IRS gives House committee Trump’s tax returns

  • The House Ways and Means Committee now has six years of Donald Trump’s tax returns.
  • They concluded a years-long chase by Democrats.
  • The department cooperated with last week’s court order.

The House Ways and Means Committee now has six years of Donald Trump’s tax returns, concluding a years-long chase by Democrats.

A Treasury official told CNN on Wednesday that the department cooperated with last week’s court order.

The representative didn’t elaborate. According to court records, the House might obtain six years of Trump’s tax returns after requesting them in 2019 and 2021.

The handover was delayed until the Supreme Court refused to interfere last week. Several judges, including Republican appointments, ruled the House could request IRS returns.

A Treasury spokesman declined to say if committee members saw the documents.

The committee, led by Massachusetts Democrat Richard Neal, wanted Trump’s tax returns from his term as president. This includes Trump’s personal and corporate records.

Neal’s aide said the panel will meet Thursday to discuss the legal repercussions of the tax law section Neal invoked to acquire Trump’s returns.

Neither Democrats nor the public are anticipated to study the tax returns this session.

House general counsel Doug Letter will advise the panel on section 6103 of the tax law during the weekly meeting.

Neal refused to tell CNN if he had Trump’s tax returns, saying the law forbids him to do so. The congressman also wouldn’t say whether they’d reveal any returns.

Neal: Next, a Democratic caucus meeting.

Trump’s legal team had fought to keep his returns confidential and turned to the Supreme Court after losing in lower courts.

Trump cautioned the Supreme Court that the DC Circuit’s verdict might have “far-reaching ramifications” He contended that lower courts’ response to the House request violated the Supreme Court’s Mazars opinion, which involved a subpoena the House sent to Trump’s accounting firm for tax information.

Since his first campaign, Trump’s taxes have been a mystery.

Trump broke with presidential election standards by refusing to release his tax returns during the 2016 campaign and after he assumed office.

Under IRS audits, publishing tax returns is not prohibited. Trump uses it to avoid publishing his financial details.

Trump’s tax lawyers revealed he was audited in 2016. The IRS reviewed Trump’s taxes from 2002 to 2008, the letter claimed. Even though the audits were over, Trump did not reveal those tax returns.

In 10 of 15 years beginning in 2000, Trump reported losing more than he made, according to a 2020 New York Times story.
