US Vice President Joe Biden announced that Elon Musk had purchased Twitter, a social media site that spreads misinformation around the world.
Twitter lay off half of its workers on Friday, but said the cuts were smaller in the team in charge of stopping the spread of misinformation, as advertisers cut down on spending due to worries over content moderation.
At a fundraiser, Biden stated: “And now we’re all worried: Elon Musk goes out and buys a company that distributes – that spews misinformation all over the world… There are no editors in America anymore. There aren’t any editors. How can we expect children to grasp what is at stake?”
Earlier, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that Biden had been emphatic on the importance of reducing hate speech and misinformation.
“That belief extends to Twitter, it extends to Facebook and any other social media platforms where users can spread misinformation,” she said.
Musk has promised to restore free expression on Twitter while stopping it from becoming a “hellscape.” However, large marketers have been concerned about his takeover for months.
