ISLAMABAD: Taking notice of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Saturday banned airing and re-airing of Imran Khan’s speeches and press conferences on all satellite TV channels, Bol News reported.

The PEMRA said the restriction had been imposed under the PEMRA Ordinance 2002.

PTI leader Shehbaz Gill in a tweet said the TV channel regulatory authority had banned showing Imran Khan’s speeches. He asked if any action was left that was not taken against Khan.

The PEMRA said after analyzing content of the speeches made by Imran Khan aired by various satellite TV channels, it had been observed that the licensees had been failed to comply with the provisions of laws as well as orders of the courts, to use delay mechanism effectively and to ensure effective editorial control, therefore, the PEMRA chairman prohibited broadcast and re-broadcast of speech(es)/ press conferences of Imran Khan on all satellite TV channels with immediate effect.

The regulatory authority threatened that license of TV channel might be suspended in case of any violation, under Section 30 (3) of PEMRA Ordinance 2002, without any show cause notice in the public interest along with other enabling provisions of law.

PTI leader Faisal Javed said the government of Pakistan was breaking all records of human rights violations and curbing freedom of speech, by placing ban on Imran Khan’s speeches on TV.

“The PTI has decided to challenge it in the court. TV channels will further lose viewership but Imran Khan’s speeches will be watched by millions on digital media,” he said.
