Prince Harry has sparked outrage after claiming that he never heard the words “therapy” or “coaching” while working at the Firm.
The Duke of Sussex, who has delayed writing his memoir in the aftermath of the Queen’s death, reportedly made the remarks while speaking as an ambassador for mental health coaching firm Betterup at the Masters of Scale conference.
The 38-year-old, who has previously spoken openly about his mental health issues, stated that he believed there was “only one way to live” until he began therapy.
The Duke said at a San Francisco event that he now understands his “value” and has regained his confidence.
Many see this as an attack on the monarchy’s failure to care for its subjects. Some interpret it as yet another indictment of the monarchy for failing to care for the mental health of its principals.
Although no video or audio of the event has been released, several attendees have tweeted the substance of Duke’s words, which he spoke during an on-stage conversation with the firm’s founder, Alexi Robichaux.
Doron Weber, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Vice President and Program Director, tweeted: “Growing up in the royal family and then serving in the military for ten years, Prince Harry claims he never heard the words “therapy” or “coaching.” Then the blinkers came off, and his life was transformed.”
According to the father-of-two, “I have a coach. I wish I had two” according to Financial Times West Coast correspondent Dave Lee’s tweet.
Tjada D’Oyen McKenna, CEO of Mercy Corps, tweeted that Harry said, “From a boss standpoint, if you see your people as numbers, you will fail. You can’t treat them as numbers, but folks who need a human connection to fire on all cylinders.”
