Since the beginning of this week, Ukrainian forces have advanced more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) into Russian-held territory. They have already arrived on the western outskirts of Kupiansk and have also launched an attack southward towards Izium.

The fast advance has created the appearance of a coming conflict over the two critical locations that are valued highly by both sides. Russian soldiers are currently being resupplied by rail through Kupiansk, and attacks into the Donetsk region are currently launched from Izium.

At least 15 desertions, according to the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ general staff, occurred on Friday.

According to the report, soldiers were trying to cross into Russian territory while donning civilian clothing in place of their uniforms.
