Windows 11 comes with new command-line tool by default

  • Windows Terminal is the default terminal in Windows 11 Insider Preview.
  • This means that command line apps like Command Prompt and PowerShell will now automatically open in Windows Terminal for people in the early access Dev Channel.
  • Microsoft will soon start making the change for more people.

In the latest Windows 11 Insider preview build, Windows Terminal is set as the default terminal. This means that your command line experience could change soon.

As explained in a Microsoft blog post (opens in a new tab), all command line apps, like Command Prompt and PowerShell, will now automatically open in Windows Terminal for people in the early access Dev Channel.

Windows Terminal, released in 2019, is a modern replacement for Microsoft’s decades-old Windows Console. It allows users to build their own themes and change text, colours, backgrounds, and shortcuts.

Does this impact me?

The change will only affect you if you have Windows Terminal version 1.15 installed, which you can get from GitHub by clicking here (opens in new tab) and are a member of the early access program.

But Microsoft will soon start making the change for more people. When Windows 11 comes out in 2022, at a date that hasn’t been announced yet, Windows Terminal will be the default command line.

But if your business computer is one of the many that isn’t powerful enough to run Windows 11, you might still have to use Windows Console for a while.

If you still want your console to have a more traditional feel, you can turn off this feature by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > For developers and then changing the Terminal setting.

For people who want to run command prompts, there are also many alternatives to Windows Terminal, such as Cmder, Xshell, PuTTY, and Microsoft’s own PowerShell.
