White House physician says Joe Biden tests negative for Covid-19

  • Joe Biden tested negative for Covid-19 but will remain in isolation pending a second test.
  • Last Saturday, after taking a five-day course of Pfizer’s antiviral drug Paxlovid, Biden tested positive.
  • There are currently no events on his public weekend schedule. The President and First Lady Jill Biden are scheduled to visit Kentucky on Monday.

Joe Biden’s doctor announced Saturday that Biden tested negative for Covid-19 but will remain in isolation pending a second test.

“The President continues to feel very well,” Dr. Kevin O’Connor wrote. “Given his rebound positivity which we reported last Saturday, we have continued daily monitoring.

This morning, his SARS-CoV-2 antigen testing was negative. In an abundance of caution, the President will continue his strict isolation measures pending a second negative test as previously described.”

After initially testing positive for Covid-19 on July 21, Biden has not left the White House for 17 days. Last Saturday, after taking a five-day course of Pfizer’s antiviral drug Paxlovid, Biden tested positive for a rebound case of Covid-19 and was placed back in isolation. There are currently no events on his public weekend schedule.

During his isolation, the President has virtually attended public events from the White House residence. He delivered socially distant remarks to a restricted pool from the Blue Room balcony on two occasions, announcing a successful strike that killed al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri on Monday and signing two bills cracking down on Covid-19 relief fraud on Friday.

The President and First Lady Jill Biden are scheduled to visit Kentucky on Monday after deadly floods in the state’s eastern part killed dozens of people and devastated the area.

“People with recurrence of COVID-19 symptoms or a new positive viral test after having tested negative should restart isolation and isolate for at least 5 days,” according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to his doctor, Biden’s first bout with the disease resulted in mild symptoms such as a runny nose, fatigue, a high temperature, and a cough.

The President’s five-day course of Paxlovid requires a doctor’s prescription and is available through emergency use authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of mild-to-moderate Covid-19 in people 12 and older who are at high risk of severe illness.

On May 24, the CDC issued a health alert to doctors, warning that Covid-19 symptoms can reappear, and that this may be how the infection manifests itself in some people, regardless of whether they’ve been vaccinated or treated with medications like Paxlovid. According to the CDC, the majority of rebound cases involve mild disease, and there have been no reports of serious illness.

Biden has been fully immunised and has received two booster shots. Prior to his inauguration in January 2021, he received his first two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, his first booster shot in September, and his second booster shot in March.
