US Theme Park character ignores black girls their family sues it for $25M

A black family from Baltimore, US filed a $25 million class action lawsuit for racial discrimination against Sesame Place outside Philadelphia.

During a meet-and-greet, various costumed characters allegedly declined to shake Jodi Brown’s 5-year-old daughter and niece’s hands, according to reports.

Jodi Brown posted a nine-second video to Instagram showing Rosita high-fiving a white child and adult, then signalling “no” and walking away from the two girls who had their arms out for a hug and high-five during the parade at Sesame Place in Langhorne.

The footage of the incident has gone viral on social media. Some called for a boycott of the amusement park online.

Brown tweeted, “I will never step foot in @sesameplace ever again.”

Sesame Place says it and its employees support “inclusivity and equality in all forms” The statement also claimed that performers overlook embraces because their clothes make it hard to see from underneath.

“The Rosita performer did not intentionally ignore the girls and is devastated by the misunderstanding,” according to a statement.

The park apologised again Monday and promised to “taking action to do better.”  Included is employee inclusion training.

Both words and the video sparked a strong reaction on social media, which LaMarr said helped highlight  “the existence of these issues.”
