Western Montana evacuations due to wildfire

  • Red Cross working to set up an evacuation center at Linderman School in Polson.
  • Highway 28 is closed between milepost 36 and milepost 46.7.
  • Area of Elmo is now in level 3 evacuation meaning residents need to leave the area.

The Elmo region is seeing a rapidly spreading wildfire, forcing many residents to flee their homes. The Red Cross is planning to establish an evacuation shelter at Linderman School; in Polson for these residents.

According to a social media post from the Polson Chamber of Commerce; 120 people from at least seven agencies are responding. Additionally, air support is travelling to the fire.

Animals and houses in the region are still being evacuated by crews.

Highway 28 is closed, and the fire near Elmo is now thought to have spread to more than 200 acres; according to a social media post from the City of Polson Fire Department.

Elmo’s neighbourhood is currently under level 3 evacuation, meaning locals must evacuate.

Level 1 means households should start preparing in the region southeast of Elmo.

Level 2 means that inhabitants should be ready to evacuate if required; and this location is northwest of here near Dayton.

According to the Montana Department of Transportation; Highway 28 shut down between mileposts 36 and 46.7.
