  • The family was rescued from a residence in Rio de Janeiro’s west.
  • Civil police launched an investigation.

According to local media, a Brazilian mother has come out about her husband’s 17-year imprisonment of her and her two children.

According to authorities, the family was rescued from a residence in the Guaratiba neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro’s west on Thursday.

The husband was detained.

According to Brazilian news site G1, the woman told investigators that her husband told her she would only leave the residence after she died.

According to G1, the guy, identified as Luiz Antonio Santos Silva by officials, and his wife had been married for 23 years.

After being rescued, the mother reportedly told police that the three imprisoned family members would sometimes go three days without food and were frequently physically and psychologically harassed, according to G1.

The house where they were held captive was similarly filthy, with little light and a filthy interior, according to photos supplied by the police.

According to investigators, the two adult children were found chained up, untidy, and starving. According to local media, they are 19 and 22 years old.

Captain William Oliveira of the military police told the Brazilian newspaper, O Dia, that he initially mistook the two for youngsters due to their malnutrition.

“When we saw the two children’s state, we thought they wouldn’t have survived another week,” one local told G1.

According to local media, the three were immediately rushed to the hospital after being rescued after being treated for acute dehydration and malnutrition.

According to O Dia, the civil police’s internal affairs office has launched an investigation into why the family was not rescued sooner after it was revealed that the family’s plight was initially reported in 2020.
