UK research: More and more healthy kids are attempting to shed weight

  • Experts from Oxford University quizzed nearly 34,000 children about their weight.
  • Findings showed that the number of healthy children trying to lose weight had tripled in 20 years.
  • The number of overweight children also increased four times over the same period.

Nearly 34,000 kids were questioned by Oxford University experts who wanted to know; if they were thinking about their weight.

Findings revealed a 20-fold increase in the number of healthy youngsters; who were seeking to shed weight.

When the research started in 1997; 5% of kids with a healthy BMI were opting to diet. That percentage increased to 14% in 2016.

While this was happening, there were four times as many overweight kids; trying to reduce weight.

The study group declared it a “success” when obese children; and young people tried to lose weight.

However, concerns were raised when healthy kids mimicked the behaviour.

The number of obese youngsters was evident in the statistics; but it was not clear how many of them were enrolled in weight-management programmes. To close the gap; researchers chose to examine answers from kids between the ages of eight and 17.

The students were questioned during interviews about their weight management efforts.

Archives of Disease in Childhood reported the findings.

The need of supervision was emphasised by the researchers.

The group concluded that “further study is needed to understand the factors; that lead young people with healthy weights to seek weight loss.”
