Presidio Tunnel Tops

The public may now visit the brand-new Tunnel Tops park in San Francisco

  • Tunnel Tops is a new city park in San Francisco’s Presidio neighborhood.
  • Visitors will likely not realize you’re walking on top of a tunnel at all.
  • The vista from the new Tunnel Tops park had been obscured from pedestrians for decades.

Anger surged through me as I stared out at the Golden Gate Bridge on a warm summer morning; as fog gently moved between the towering orange beams. In addition to being inaccessible to pedestrians for many years; this expansive view from the new Tunnel Tops park also severed a connection to the sea; from one of the most distinctive national parklands in the nation.

Sure, there are many other spots to obtain a decent perspective of San Francisco’s most famous landmark; but for over a century, only passing automobiles, military personnel, infrequent event attendees; and Burger King customers had access to this panorama. A Burger King, indeed.

We’ll talk about the Burger King later, but nothing was obviously new or flashy as people sat on benches; fashioned from cypress trees that had fallen in the Presidio while kids played on wooden and stone playsets. Freshly planted native plants and well designed; groomed walkways merged into the surroundings, drawing attention away; from what a city park is and more to what it can be. The fact that you probably won’t even be aware that you are strolling on top of a tunnel; is undoubtedly the nicest feature of Tunnel Tops.
