More than 14,000 people in France have been evacuated as a result of wildfires in the country’s southwest spreading to Spain, Croatia, and Greece.

Authorities in France’s Gironde, a well-known tourist destination, have removed guards from campgrounds because the tourists had already departed. The Teste-de-Buch and Landiras areas are ablaze.

More than 3,200 people left the Mijas hills in southern Spain due to fires, though some were eventually permitted to return.

Fires in Portugal are currently under control.

The Portuguese government claims that during the past week, at least 238 individuals have perished from heat-related causes.

Málaga, a well-liked tourist destination, is not far from the Mijas fires in Spain. The provinces of Castilla y León and Galicia have had wildfire outbreaks elsewhere in Spain.

Numerous waterbombing aircraft have been deployed, together with thousands of firefighters, across the Mediterranean, from Crete in the east to Morocco in the west. The area has been experiencing extreme heat since Tuesday, which has dried out the plants to the bone.

Due to human-induced climate change, heatwaves are now more common, more powerful, and stay longer.

Since the start of the industrial period, the world has already warmed by around 1.1C, and temperatures will continue to rise unless governments drastically reduce carbon emissions.

In the country’s south, the French weather office has projected Sunday highs of up to 41C (106F), and Monday is expected to set new heat records. Recently, the temperature in Portugal rose to 47C.

As the nation prepares for record-breaking heat on Monday and Tuesday, which might reach 41C in some areas, the UK has issued an amber warning for extreme heat.
