Resisting China growing determination to defy international rules is crucial. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand stated that; China has grown “more forceful and more eager to question; international laws and norms,” adding that this must be resisted. Speaking on Wednesday at the NATO meeting in Madrid; Ms. Ardern singled out China. The rules-based order must be upheld; diplomatic engagement is encouraged; and human rights violations must always be denounced; whenever and wherever they occur, according to the speaker.

“Until diplomacy is ineffective; we must utilise it whenever possible. Instead of militarization, she said; we need to develop the Indo-Pacific region’s capacity for resilience; through connections and its economic structure.

Along with criticising the Russian invasion of Ukraine; Ms. Ardern emphasised the importance of international law; and warned against the start of a new arms race between countries.

According to Ms. Ardern, the Pacific area was also feeling “growing strain on the international rules-based order”; as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Mr. Ardern criticised Vladimir Putin’s actions as “an affront to all of us”; and urged the alliance to prevent an arms race or the emergence; of a more divisive and dangerous world as a result of the conflict in Ukraine. Because of the impossibility of the alternative; she continued, “This crossroads that the world finds itself at should be the reason; for us to put a halt to the creation of weapons; that generate our mutually guaranteed annihilation.”
