Palestinian gunmen opened fire on Jewish worshippers at a volatile holy site in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, injuring a military officer and two civilians, according to the Israeli army.
The Palestinian news agency reported that one Palestinian teen was injured by live fire and sixteen others were injured by rubber bullets during clashes with Israeli forces near the city of Nablus in the northern West Bank.
The site is a frequent site of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
Some Jews think the biblical Joseph is buried at this location, although Palestinians claim it is a Sheikh’s tomb.
Frequently, Jewish worshipers led by the Israeli military pray at the shrine.
As per the Israeli military, Palestinian militants opened fire on hundreds of Jewish worshippers who arrived at the site on Thursday night.
According to the army, the unit’s commanding officer and two civilians sustained minor injuries.
According to accounts, a Palestinian youth was killed and at least 15 others were injured in skirmishes with the military near the holy site last month.
In April, Palestinians set fire to the site before Palestinian security forces drove them away. This was something that Israeli leaders said was wrong.

The battle on Thursday was the latest in a wave of violence that has been going on for months in response to a series of deadly attacks in Israel, Israeli arrest raids across the West Bank, and the killing of a Palestinian-American Al Jazeera reporter.
The West Bank was taken by Israel in the 1967 Middle East War, and the Palestinians view it as the potential capital of their future state.
In over 130 settlements dotted around the West Bank, almost 500,000 Israeli settlers coexist with roughly 3 million Palestinians living under Israeli military authority.
