Mohammed Zubair was asked for interrogation in a different matter, according to AltNews co-founder Pratik Sinha, but was arrested as soon as this case was filed.
Journalist One of the creators of the fact-checking website AltNews, Mohammed Zubair, was detained by the Delhi Police today on suspicion of inciting hatred and hurting religious feelings.
According to authorities, the case stems from a complaint made by the Twitter user ‘@balajikijaiin’ earlier this month, who claimed that Mr. Zubair had tweeted a “questionable” image with the intention of “deliberately insulting the god of a certain religion.” That tweet was posted by Mr. Zubair in March 2018.
Altnews & @zoo_bear have been in the forefront of exposing the bogus claims of the Vishguru, who has struck back with a vengeance characteristic of him. Delhi Police, reporting to the Union Home Minister, has long lost any pretensions of professionalism and independence. https://t.co/OPi1MMth5g

Mr. Zubair was summoned to Delhi for questioning in a different matter from 2020, in which the court had granted him protection from arrest, according to AltNews co-founder Pratik Sinha. However, according to Mr. Sinha, he was arrested in this new instance without receiving the required notification. “Despite numerous demands, no copy of the FIR is being provided to us.”

Police acknowledged that Mr. Zubair was initially being questioned in an earlier case, but he was only taken into custody in the more recent instance “when there was enough evidence on file.” He is still being questioned, and tomorrow, police will ask a magistrate to order him to remain in detention.
In the earlier case from 2020, a girl on Twitter was allegedly harassed. When Mr. Zubair reposted the man’s profile picture with his granddaughter, he obscured her face to attract attention to the man’s aggressive online behaviour. The police have already informed the court that Mr. Zubair has no charges pending against him related to the tweet.
