As Ukraine, a pro-Western nation, fights a Russian invasion force that is marching through the country’s east with the aid of a huge advantage in heavy artillery, the HIMARS rocket systems are at the top of the country’s wish list.
The first four rocket systems have already been delivered, beginning the training process needed for Ukrainian forces to use the advanced and incredibly precise weaponry. According to the Pentagon, four more are currently being dispatched.
The Pentagon added that the shipment also contains replacement components, 18 trucks used to tow 155mm artillery pieces, 1,200 grenade launchers, 2,000 machine guns, 18 river and coastal patrol boats, and 36,000 rounds of artillery ammunition.
With the most recent shipments, the US has given Ukraine’s military $6.1 billion since the beginning of Russia’s invasion in February, according to Kirby.
