A Nigerian senator has been accused of planning to bring a kid to the UK so that organs may be removed.

Beatrice Nwanneka Ekwereka Ekweremadu, 55, and Ike Ekweremadu, 60, were scheduled to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The senator had been charged in the UK for the incident, Mr. Ekweremadu’s spokeswoman told the BBC.

Unknown in age, the child has been placed in foster care. The suspected victim was being supported, according to the police.

The Ekweremadus are charged with conspiring to plan and/or facilitate another person’s travel with the intention of taking advantage of them.

From 2007 to 2019, Mr. Ekweremadu spent three terms as the vice president of the Senate of Nigeria. Most recently, he was appointed a visiting professor at the University of Lincoln.

The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senator and lawyer has served in the Senate since 2003.

Detectives were alerted about possible modern-day slavery offences, and the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Team launched an inquiry.

Removing bodily components—often against the victim’s choice and for financial gain—is called organ harvesting.

A representative for the University of Lincoln stated: “Visiting professors are frequently non-resident at the university, unpaid, and advisory, as is the case in this case.

We have serious concerns about the nature of these allegations, but we are unable to say further at this time because a police investigation is ongoing.
