Israel leader intends to dissolve the Knesset

  • Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid plan to dissolve parliament.
  • Elections are likely to take place on Oct. 25, according to Israeli media.
  • The move could set the stage for a fifth round of general elections in less than four years.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid announced on Monday that the Knesset will be dissolved next week; paving the way for the country’s fifth round of general elections in less than four years.

If the motion to dissolve parliament passes; Lapid will take over as interim prime minister; though Bennett will remain in charge of the Iran portfolio; as their power-sharing deal stipulated. According to Israeli media; elections are expected to take place on October 25.

Bennett and Lapid said in a joint statement that they had “exhausted options to stabilise” their coalition; which was formed a year ago by a coalition of ideologically diverse parties; including left-wing peaceniks, right-wing settlers’ supporters, and, for the first time in Israeli history, an Arab Islamist party.
