Marcus Davenport of the New Orleans Saints finally had his finger issue repaired, but it came at a cost.

Davenport told reporters on Wednesday that he had the top of his left pinkie removed after shattering a plate that had been placed into it over the offseason.

The problem led to more surgery and, finally, amputation when he got an infection in his finger.

He informed reporters that he first tore ligaments in his finger while at Texas-San Antonio during a bowl game.

Davenport, 25, said that he underwent shoulder surgery in the summer and that the finger issue slowed his recovery. He claims that his partially severed finger will not hinder his pass-rushing talents.

Overall, he stated that he was simply grateful to be alive.

“After all of this, I’m just grateful to be alive. I’m learning more about and becoming more involved in the health-care system, therefore I’m grateful “he stated.

Davenport was selected 14th overall by the Saints in the 2018 draft. Since then, he’s appeared in 48 games, racking up 113 tackles and 21 sacks.

He’s a huge reason why the Saints’ defense has finished in the top 10 in scores allowed and yards allowed the last two seasons.
