Camera modules in upcoming smartphones will be based on DSLR technology

“Still photographs [from smartphones] will reach the image quality of single-lens reflex cameras within the next few years,” Terushi Shimizu, President and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS); said during a recent business conference. Sony anticipates smartphone “still photos will exceed ILC [interchangeable lens camera] image quality” by 2024, according to a slide from the same briefing.

We’ve already seen the power of advanced AI features on Google Pixel smartphones; and Sony appears to be aiming for a future with similar acceptance by other phone makers.

Furthermore, the camera sensor’s megapixel count is currently approaching unprecedented heights. Samsung, for example, has already shown the way forward by building a 200-megapixel smartphone sensor. With more innovation packed into mobile devices, Sony, Oppo, and Vivo will all have a say in the industry. The present diversity of the photography space is evidenced; by phones like the Vivo X80 Pro and even the Pixel 6 Pro.
