As Russian advances pull them back, Ukrainian troops may soon have to retire from a crucial eastern city; according to the region’s governor and Western military specialists. Soldiers defending Sievierodonetsk are still “fighting for every inch”; but Luhansk Governor Sergiy Haidai stated early Wednesday that they may have to step back as Russia puts everything it has at regaining control of the city.

“Even if our army has to evacuate to better defended positions since everything there is being shot at 24/7,” Haidai stated on Ukrainian television, “no one will give up the city.”
“But yeah, it’s possible we’ll have to retreat,” he stated afterwards. The battle for Sievierodonetsk has been the focal point of the conflict, with Russia gradually progressing toward its bigger aim of gaining complete control of the industrial Donbas region.
