According to The Daily Mail, Japanese scientists have discovered that judging the molecules found in a person’s blood can determine whether or not they are lonely.

83 people’s blood samples were examined by Japanese researchers. Some chemicals were discovered in patients who were suffering from severe social withdrawal.

Long-chain acylcarnitine, a lipid associated to heart disease, was detected in high concentrations in the blood of lonely males. Bilirubin and arginine, two compounds linked to depression, were also discovered.

The findings were published in the Dialogues In Clinical Neuroscience journal. Scientists believe that understanding the biological foundations of loneliness is the first step toward achieving that goal.
