Madonna is directing the picture, which is based on a Diablo Cody book, and has gone to great lengths in the auditioning process, putting actors through a boot camp that included dance and singing tests.

The studio has made it plain that it needs at the very least a name that people recognise, and Garner has long been that person, thanks to her leading lady reputation as a result of her breakout appearances in Ozark and, most recently, Inventing Anna. She is presently filming Apartment 7A for Paramount.
