MILAN – According to sources, an Italian court will appoint a special administrator to take over transport business Schenker Italiana SpA after the Deutsche Bahn unit became embroiled in an anti-Mafia probe into one of its subcontractors.
The ruling, issued by a Milan court, will be in effect for a year for a company that employs over 1,400 people in Italy.
According to a joint statement made by the Italian financial police and carabinieri force, the exceptional measures would apply to two unnamed companies. Schenker Italiana was one of them, according to two persons with knowledge of the situation.
“We have heard of allegations in connection with a subcontractor of Schenker Italiana. We fully support the authorities,” said a Deutsche Bahn Schenker spokesperson in Germany.
Schenker Italiana did not reply quickly to a request for comment.
According to the sources, neither the current management of Schenker Italiana nor the firm itself is being investigated.
An investigation into a haulage company suspected of being managed by the Calabrian Mafia, known as the ‘Ndrangheta,’ which began in April 2020, discovered commercial linkages to the two enterprises, according to the police.
(Throughout this article, the name of the company is corrected to Schenker Italiana.)
Emilio Parodi in Milan contributed reporting, as did Zuzanna Szymanska in Berlin. Keith Weir wrote the piece, and David Evans edited it.
