In Barcelona, Spain, a freight carriage derailed and collided with a passenger train.
After a collision between two trains on Monday afternoon, May 16, in Barcelona’s Sant Boi de Llobregat neighbourhood, a driver was killed and 85 people were injured, nine of whom required hospitalisation.
According to official reports, the tragedy happened at 6 p.m., when a freight train derailed at the station entry, smashing into the cabin of a passenger train leaving the station at the same moment.
Marta Subirà, President of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), revealed that emergency services rescued approximately 100 passengers from the trains, while officials investigate the cause of the disaster on the Sant Boi tracks.
She also stated that there have been no other fatal accidents on the FGC train network in recent years.
Meanwhile, Pedro Sánchez, President of the Spanish Government, has expressed his “regret” to Catalan leader and pledged the “maximum collaboration and solidarity of the Government.”
Mr Sánchez expressed “all our support” in a tweet shortly after the disaster.
