Buffalo supermarket shooting: Everything we know so far

In what officials have termed as a “hate crime and racially motivated violent extremism,” an 18-year-old white boy opened fire at a Buffalo, New York supermarket on Saturday, killing ten people and wounded three
more.

Eleven of the 13 victims were Black, and two were Caucasian.

The Caucasian shooter arrived at Tops Friendly Market about 2.30 p.m., “allegedly wearing tactical gear and armed with an assault weapon,” according to authorities. According to local prosecutors, the attacker shot four persons outside the grocery store, three of whom died.

He then went into the supermarket, where he was met by a security officer who had recently retired from the Buffalo police department. According to investigators, the shooter killed the guard and shot eight more individuals inside the business, six of whom died.

Authorities stated the attacker was charged with first-degree murder hours later. Here’s what we know so far about the victims.

When the shooter entered Tops on Saturday, Aaron Salter, a retired Buffalo police lieutenant, was acting as a security guard.

“One of the individuals inside the store is a security guard, a beloved security guard, who is a retired Buffalo police officer – a hero in our eyes – he engaged the suspect and fired multiple shots,” Buffalo’s police commissioner, Joseph Gramaglia, reportedly said at a press conference.

The 86-year-old Ruth Whitfield had just visited her husband at his nursing home when she decided to pick up food at Tops, WGRZ reported.

The Buffalo News identified one of the victims as Katherine Massey, reporting that a family member confirmed her death.
