According to a White House press statement issued Monday, the Biden administration received agreements from 20 internet service providers to either decrease pricing or enhance speeds to benefit low-income customers.
According to the White House, the revelation means that tens of millions of families could get free high-speed internet. Low-income families that qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Program, which was recently authorized by Congress, can save up to $30 per month on their internet expenses. Participants will basically receive internet service for free because the ISPs who made the promise to the White House agreed to offer high-speed internet options to ACP homes for no more than that amount.
According to the White House, a high-speed plan should provide download speeds of at least 100 megabits per second wherever the ISP’s infrastructure allows it.
According to the White House, Verizon’s Fios subscription fee was reduced from $39.99 per month to $30 per month as part of the initiative, which included upload and download speeds of at least 200 megabits per second. Spectrum increased the download speed of its $30 per month plan for ACP participants from 50 to 100 megabits per second.
GetInternet.gov was also developed by the administration to help people sign up for ACP and locate participating local providers. It also intends to contact eligible households through other government assistance programme such as Pell Grants or Medicaid.
