The discourse about diversity in Hollywood, according to Deepika Padukone, is ‘surface level.’

In a recent interview, Deepika Padukone speaks out about the ‘surface level’ discussion about diversity in Hollywood casting.

In an interview with Vogue, the Gehraiyaan actress stated that there is still a long way to go before people notice a difference in Hollywood’s efforts to recruit diverse actors.

“Right now, the conversation around diversity in Hollywood is surface-level,” the 36-year-old actor stated. It’s called ‘diversity casting’ as soon as a Black or Asian actor appears.”

“But we have a long way to go before we start seeing substantial change. I feel like 80 per cent of the people in charge are still looking at inclusive casting as a box to be ticked,” Deepika added.

“No doubt, there are some who are genuinely interested in turning the tide,” the Bollywood star added, “but they are getting it quite wrong.”

“It’s a learning process, and I hope it’s an earnest one,” she concluded her statement.

In 2017, she made her big screen debut alongside Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

Deepika will make her comeback in 2021 with a cross-cultural love comedy that she will also co-produce.
