The Government’s infrastructure head has cautioned that new gas boilers must be outlawed to encourage households to switch to more environmentally friendly heat pumps.
Heat pumps utilize electricity to extract energy from the air or earth. However, they cost around £10,000 to install.
Sir John Armitt, chairman of the National Infrastructure Commission, said: “Why would you move to a heat pump at between £5,000 to £15,000 when you can buy or exchange for a new gas boiler for £1,500.”
“The only way you can make such a significant shift is by saying from a particular date, you won’t be able to buy a new gas boiler.”
By 2028, the government intends to add 600,000 pumps each year.
However, one option is green gas created from the grass on farms. It generates 100 percent renewable energy without requiring the removal of existing boilers.
Dale Vince, the creator of Ecotricity, stated: “We do not require any changes to the existing gas mains infrastructure. More significantly, customers will avoid having to replace equipment.”
The Daily Express and Ecotricity, a green energy company, have started a campaign to safeguard Britain’s gas boilers.
