The city council of Mariupol, in the southeastern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, claimed on Monday that more than 1,000 residents are hiding in subterranean bunkers beneath the enormous Azovstal steel facility, which is under severe Russian bombardment.
“Most (civilians) are mothers with children or elderly,” the city council posted on Telegram. There have been street fighting in Mariupol this week as Russian forces seek to retake the city from Ukraine.
