Mobile phone taxes going to be abolished or not? Explanation of PTA

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has issued an explanation about abolishing mobile phone taxes from April 15.

A user on the social networking site Twitter asked the PTA whether they will abolish the tax on mobile phones from April 15.

The PTA, in response to a customer’s question, said that at present all customers are responsible for paying the applicable duty of FBR to complete the registration process.

The user then asked PTA, “How long will the tax on mobile phones be abolished?”

In response, the PTA said to contact the FBR.

The PTA’s explanation makes it clear that the rumours about the abolition of mobile phone taxes are false.

On the other hand, the PTA also clarified that in view of the recent increase in taxes/duties for the registration of mobile devices, these taxes and duties are implemented and submitted directly to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

PTA further clarified that they are providing Device Identification and Registration Database (DIRBS) system for mobile device registration free of cost for the convenience of the public.

PTA only provides technical support in the form of DIRBS through which applicants can register to use their mobile devices within Pakistan.

During this process, taxes are enforced by the FBR and are collected directly with the FBR.
