Punjab CM orders action against wheat hoarders, price hike

LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has directed strict action against those exploiting the flood situation by increasing the prices of wheat flour and bread.

To curb wheat hoarding, the Chief Minister has granted special powers to the Para Force. Moreover, Section 144 has been imposed to restrict the use of wheat in feed mills, while price control magistrates have also been directed to take immediate action.

In a special meeting, Maryam Nawaz said that the price of bread should not be increased by Rs 14 and 20 kg flour from Rs 1810.

Punjab Chief Minister said that no one would be allowed to raise the prices of flour and bread under the pretext of flooding, adding that hoarding wheat is tantamount to hostility towards the people.

On the other hand, Punjab government has imposed an immediate ban on the use of wheat in feed mills across the province.

According to the Home Secretary’s notification, wheat will now only be utilized in flour mills for producing flour.

The government said Section 144 has been enforced to guarantee smooth availability of wheat, flour, and bread, amid concerns of a possible shortage in the province.

Punjab Home Secretary has imposed restrictions under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.

According to the notification issued by the Home Department, the ban will remain in effect until Friday, October 3.

The order has also directed wide publicity of the notification through the official gazette, newspapers, and other media outlets to ensure public awareness.
