Google introduces transparent backgrounds for live captions on android

Google is introducing a new update for Live Caption, enabling users to opt for a transparent background instead of the previously mandatory solid one. This feature is currently available on newer Pixel devices, with plans to extend it to other Android smartphones soon.

Live Caption Gets a Visual Upgrade

Live Caption, an accessibility feature that generates real-time captions for media playback, has received a significant enhancement. Previously, users could modify font size, colour, and placement, but background customization was limited.

With the latest Android System Intelligence V.17 update, Google has added a “Background transparency” option, allowing users to improve text readability while ensuring the on-screen content remains visible.

Who Can Access the Live Caption Update?

The new Live Caption Transparency feature is being rolled out to select Pixel models, with support for other Android devices expected in the future.

Users can check for access by navigating to the Live Caption settings, where they will find the “Background transparency” toggle.

Google has been actively improving Live Caption with new features, including Expressive Captions, introduced last month. While an official release date for other Android models has not been confirmed, the update is expected to become widely available in the coming months.
