- The studio’s focus on villains was deliberate, with the first “Venom” film featuring a post-credit Spider-Man cameo.
- Sony’s latest venture, “Kraven the Hunter,” received low reviews and low Rotten Tomatoes scores.
- Sony’s animated “Spider-Verse” series showcases alternate versions of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.
For any project, the audience ultimately decides whether they like what’s presented to them. A similar situation has unfolded with Sony’s Spider-Man universe. According to an article by “GamesRadar+”, Sony reportedly chose not to focus on Marvel’s live-action Spider-Man characters, like Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, because they believed the audience didn’t want to see that.
According to the report, Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off could have included more characters like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy, and Mary Jane. The source stated that the studio’s agreement with Disney never prohibited them from doing so.
This means Sony could have included fan-favorite Spider-Man characters in projects like “Venom”, “Madame Web”, and “Kraven the Hunter”. However, reports suggest the studio believed the audience didn’t want to see these characters in non-MCU productions.
Sony deliberately chose to focus on the villains of this universe. Following the success of the first “Venom” film, the studio stayed committed to this direction. However, the second “Venom” installment featured a post-credit cameo by Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. After that, Spider-Man-related heroes were noticeably absent.
As Jeff Block, the Exhibitor Relations analyst, told Variety, “Unfortunately for Sony, they had a taste of success with Venom, and that kind of spoiled everything for them because they thought they could just spin off all of these characters… To not have Spider-Man in these films was the fatal flaw.”
Block’s assessment seems accurate, as Sony’s latest venture, “Kraven the Hunter”, received lackluster reviews and low scores on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Sony found significant success with another project: the animated “Spider-Verse” series. As “GamesRadar+” noted, this series showcases alternate versions of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.
