In a recording studio in Dubai, hijab-wearing Ghaliaa Chaker strums her guitar and performs her original songs, making waves in the music industry for reasons beyond her melodies.

The 26-year-old Syrian, who grew up in the United Arab Emirates, has captured the attention of social media with 437,000 Instagram followers and millions of views on her YouTube channel.

Chaker stands out not only for her distinctive sound but also for her rare appearance in a region where hijab-clad artists are uncommon. She expressed hope that her presence inspires other hijabi singers, saying, “It’s wonderful to know that I’ve paved the way for others who have dreams but haven’t seen someone like them succeed.”

A motorbike enthusiast and member of an all-hijabi biker group in Dubai, Chaker began composing and writing lyrics at 16.

She was inspired by Nedaa Shrara, a veiled Jordanian singer who won “The Voice” in 2015 and faced controversy for her appearance. For Chaker, Shrara represented “self-confidence,” motivating her to pursue her own musical dreams despite online criticism.

Chaker’s debut song, composed in English, gained radio play in Dubai in 2018, marking the start of her career. She now primarily sings in Arabic, contributing to the growing trend of innovative young talents in the regional music scene.
