Security forces kill 12 terrorists in Waziristan operations

Officer and two soldiers martyred, eight terrorists killed in KP operations

RAWALPINDI: At least six soldiers were martyred and 12 terrorists killed in two separate operations conducted by the security forces in North and South Waziristan.

According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), two fierce encounters took place between own troops and the terrorists in North and South Waziristan Districts, resulting in killing of 12 Khwarij(terrorists).

On 19 September, movement of group of seven terrorists, trying to infiltrate Pakistan-Afghanistan border, was detected by security forces in general area Spinwam, North Waziristan District.

The infiltrators were surrounded, effectively engaged and after an intense fire exchange, all seven khwarij(terrorists) were sent to hell. A large quantity of weapons, ammunition and explosives was also recovered.

Meanwhile, in a second incident in general area Ladha, South Waziristan District, a group of khwarij (terrorists) attacked a security forces’ post. Own troops fought bravely, foiling the attempts of intrusion and killed five Khwarij(terrorists).

However, during intense exchange of fire, six brave sons of soil, having fought gallantly, paid the ultimate sacrifice and embraced martyrdom.

Pakistan elected as IAEA’s Board of Governors

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been elected as Member of International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors (BOG) for a two year term from 2024-26.

Pakistan was elected by consensus at the 68th Session of the IAEA’s General Conference in Vienna, from the Middle East and South Asia region, for the term beginning this month. This is Pakistan’s 21st term on the IAEA’s Board of Governors, a Foreign Office press release said on Friday.

“Pakistan’s election is recognition of its long-standing commitment to the aims and objectives of the IAEA in promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy as well as its positive contribution to the formulation of the IAEA’s policies and programmes,” the FO spokesperson remarked.

Pakistan is a founding member of the IAEA and has enjoyed longstanding and mutually beneficial collaboration with the Agency on peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Pakistan hosts Anchor Centre for Cancer Care under IAEA’s Rays of Hope initiative and four Collaboration Centres in the areas of Food & Agriculture, Nuclear Safety & Security, Water Resource Management and Innovative Nuclear Technology Applications.

Moreover, the country has six operating nuclear power plants with a total capacity of 3530 MW of clean energy. Another Nuclear Power plant of 1200 MW is under construction.

The spokesperson reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to sharing its experience and expertise in peaceful uses of nuclear technology with IAEA Member States through the Agency’s Technical cooperation programme and collaborating frameworks.

FBR’s digitistation need of hour, says PM Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the digitisation of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and its improved enforcement mechanism were the need of the hour to bring about economic reforms in the country.

The prime minister chairing a meeting to review the matters related to the FBR, directed the authorities concerned to formulate a comprehensive strategy to improve FBR’s enforcement.

Calling the FBR the backbone of the national economy and appreciating its transformation plan, he said enhanced tax receipts would upgrade service delivery and the social sector.

He called for consulting the prominent taxpayers and all stakeholders on the FBR transformation plan and seeking approval of amendments in coordination with the relevant government departments for their effective implementation.

The prime minister said the promotion of the private sector was among government priorities calling it inevitable for a strong economy.

He instructed the third-party audit of FBR’s projects and expedited efforts to curb smuggling.

During the briefing, Prime Minister Shehbaz was told that the FBR transformation plan featured effective utilisation of technology, awarding efficient officers to improve tax receipts, and improving enforcement of taxation laws.

Formulated by FBR officers and experts within the last 40 days, the program would ensure tax collection without impeding economic development besides facilitating the honest taxpayers.

It also provides for strict action or restrictions on transactions against those failing to pay full tax on time or those involved in fraud, to prevent tax evasion.

It was told that such measures would be enforced after consultation with the good taxpayers.

The meeting approved the FBR’s Home Grown Transformation Plan which has been formulated on the prime minister’s directives in consultation with economic and technological experts after analysing the tax receipts during the last 25 years.

In the first phase, the efficient and competent officers would be posted in Karachi, the large taxpayer unit contributing 32%of receipts, who would be assisted by the auditors and experts.

The plan also features the reward for best-performing officers, and a mandatory professional degree from the best universities for the officers, after their common and specialised training programs.

The participants were told that in order to curb custom duties theft, an appraisal and enforcement mechanism had been devised to assign the task to appraisers and inspectors without their prior knowledge, who would also be monitored through cameras.

He developed the first captioning for a movie in 1947, splicing film strips and inserting images with captions between picture frames. Romero later created the Vibralarm in 1959 and sold a product line of items for the deaf, including doorbells, smoke detectors, and baby alarms. He retired from Republic Aviation in 1965 and was honored with a civic achievement award by the New York City Civic Association of the Deaf in 1970. On October 16, 1972, Romero took his last breaths in Boulder, Colorado.
