Oprah Winfrey says The late Sidney Poitier forever changed the conception of a Black man

Oprah Winfrey
  • Oprah Winfrey and Reginald Hudlin told Reuters that the late Sidney Poitier permanently transformed the perception of what a Black man might be on a global scale.
  • Oprah Winfrey and Reginald Hudlin’s documentary, “Sidney,” celebrates the life of Sidney Poitier
  •  Winfrey remembers how her favorite film, “Lilies of the Field” inspired her career.

Oprah Winfrey and Reginald Hudlin told Reuters ahead of the world premiere of “Sidney” that the late Sidney Poitier permanently transformed the perception of what a Black man might be on a global scale.

The Apple TV+ documentary, directed by Hudlin and produced by Winfrey, commemorates the life of Poitier, who “redefined what people thought a Black person might be and who Black people were in the world,” according to Winfrey in an interview

“For many people that was their first relationship with a Black person,” she said of seeing Poitier on the big screen. “White people did not know Black people other than as maids or servants.”

For a Black guy in the 1960s, rising to the top of Hollywood was a difficult task. Poitier’s representations of a doctor, a lawyer, and a detective shattered stereotypes.

Poitier’s character, Virgil Tibbs, is questioned as a detective in the 1967 film “In the Heat of the Night” by a white police chief in the United States South, who asks him disrespectfully what they call him back in Philadelphia. Standing up for himself, Poitier famously and vehemently says, “They call me Mr. Tibbs.”

“It was important for him as an artist, and as a Black artist, to only perform roles that were representative of what he believed was the integrity of himself and represented the integrity of his family,” Winfrey said.

Narrated by Poitier, the film paints the picture of a family man with tremendous self respect, emphasized by how his strong upbringing made him the man he was.

“No matter who you are, this movie will speak to an important part of you, and it gives you the opportunity to elevate yourself by following Sidney Poitier’s example,” said Hudlin.

Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Robert Redford, Lenny Kravitz, Barbra Streisand, Spike Lee, and Harry Belafonte all relate anecdotes on how Poitier lifted the bar in the film industry.

Winfrey remembers seeing Poitier become the first Black man to win the best actor Oscar for “Lilies of the Field” in 1964, and how it gave her hope for what was achievable in her own life.

“I remember thinking ‘if he could do that, I wonder what I can do.'”Reuters

“Barbarian,” a new horror film with a modern twist

Barbarian
  • “Barbarian” from 20th Century and New Regency debuted with $10 million.
  • Fantasy adventure “Brahmastra: Part One — Shiva” took in $4.4 million for second place.
  • Action thriller “Bullet Train” came in third place, down one spot from previous weekend.

“Barbarian,” a new horror picture with a modern twist, has terrified its way to the top of the box office in North America, earning an estimated $10 million on yet another quiet movie weekend, according to industry observer Exhibitor Relations on Sunday.

The film, from 20th Century and New Regency, tells the story of a woman (played by English actress Georgina Campbell) who checks into an AirBnB-style house in a sketchy Detroit neighbourhood only to discover that it has also been booked by Bill Skarsgard – yes, the diabolical clown from the terrifying “It” films. Justin Long also makes an appearance.

“Barbarian” has enjoyed strong reviews, with Variety calling it a “new horror classic.” David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research said its debut was “a good opening” for a low-budget horror film.

Another new release, fantasy adventure film “Brahmastra: Part One — Shiva” from Disney subsidiary Star Studios, took in $4.4 million for second place — a surprisingly strong showing for a Hindi-language Bollywood production playing in only 810 theaters.

It follows Shiva, a young man in modern-day India, whose love for Isha is strained by his surprising link to a secret society. This is the first instalment of a trilogy.

Sony’s action thriller “Bullet Train” came in third place, down one spot from the previous weekend, with $3.3 million. Brad Pitt plays a hired assassin on a high-speed Japanese train.

Meanwhile, Paramount’s lasting action film “Top Gun: Maverick,” which debuted in first place in its 15th week, has lost some altitude. It raked in $3.2 million for fourth place, despite approaching the $750 million mark internationally.

Warner Bros.’ family-friendly animation “DC League of Super-Pets” came in fifth, down one spot from the previous weekend, with $2.8 million.

The following people rounded out the top ten:

“The Invitation” ($2.6 million)

“Lifemark” ($2.2 million)

“Beast” ($1.8 million)

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($1.7 million)

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($1.3 million)

Harry Styles discusses the complexities of sexuality

Harry Styles
  • Harry Styles’ latest film, “My Policeman,” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday.
  • Styles plays a police officer involved in a forbidden love triangle with a young woman and an art gallery director.
  • The British actor-singer has been accused of copying queer culture while remaining ambiguous about his sexuality.

As his latest film, “My Policeman,” which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday, pop superstar Harry Styles highlighted the nuances of sexuality and claimed he found the closeted gay man he plays gloomy.

“My Policeman” is one of several LGBTQ-themed movies in what organizers have hailed as a “breakthrough” year at North America’s biggest film festival, along with Billy Eichner’s rom-com “Bros” and critically praised gay military drama “The Inspection.”

However, the world premiere of Styles’ latest film comes as the British actor-singer is accused by some high-profile critics of copying queer culture, particularly his gender-nonconforming design choices, while remaining ambiguous about his own sexuality.

In the film, he plays Tom, a police officer in 1950s Britain who is involved in a forbidden love triangle with a young woman and an urbane art gallery director.

“I think there’s so much nuance to them, and so much complexity that comes for people in real life around sexuality and finding themselves,” Styles told a Toronto press conference.

The film, which also stars Emma Corrin and Rupert Everett, skips between 1957 and 1999, presenting the trio at two separate points in their lives, when Britain’s attitude and regulations toward homosexuality had shifted dramatically.

It deals with the effects of all three Toms being obliged to keep his feelings for curator Patrick hidden.

“I think Tom’s version of acceptance is a pretty depressing one — I think he accepts that he’s gonna deny this part of himself for a really long time,” said Styles.

He noted: “For me, the reason why the story is so devastating is because ultimately to me, the whole story is about wasted time.

“I think wasted time is the most devastating thing, because it’s the only thing we can’t control. It’s the one thing we can’t have back.”

Filmmaker Alain Tanner passes away

Alain Tanner
  • Tanner was an internationally recognised director who began his career in the late 1950s.
  • He is credited with helping to start Switzerland’s own, lesser new wave in the 1970s.
  • His first full-length feature film, “Charles, Dead or Alive,” was released in 1969.

Geneva: Alain Tanner, a pioneer of Switzerland’s new wave film movement, died on Sunday at the age of 92, according to his foundation.

“Alain Tanner was one of the beacons of Swiss cinema,” his foundation said in a statement issued in consultation with his family.

Tanner was an internationally recognised director who began his career in the late 1950s and has over two dozen pictures to his credit.

He is credited with helping to start Switzerland’s own, lesser new wave in the 1970s, alongside colleagues Miche Soutter, Claude Goretta, Jean-Louis Roy, and Jean-Jacques Lagrange.

Their “Group of 5” sparked a revival in Swiss cinema that reflected the era’s nonconformist attitude.

Tanner’s first full-length feature film, “Charles, Dead or Alive,” was released in 1969, and it heralded the start of politically involved cinema in Switzerland.

That film, which depicts the narrative of a businessman who decides to quit mainstream capitalist life in order to live on the outskirts of society as student protests flare, earned the top prize at the Locarno film festival.

Among his best-known films are “Jonas who will be 25 in the Year 2000,” from 1976 and “Light Years Away”, which won the Grand Prix at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival.

UN chief returns to New York after whirl-wind tour of flood-hit Pakistan

UN chief returns to New York

NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres returned to New York Sunday night after wrapping up his two-day flying visit to flood-ravaged Pakistan where he saw for himself the worst-affected areas and called for urgent financial support for the country.

More than 1,300 lives have been lost, tens of millions of people are now homeless, one-third of this vast country is submerged, and livestock and crops have been wiped out. Moreover, education and learning have been interrupted for an estimated 3.5 million children, including in at least 61 refugee schools.

“I have seen many humanitarian disasters in the world, but I have never seen climate carnage on this scale. I have simply no words to describe what I have seen today: a flooded area that is three times the total area of my own country, Portugal,” the UN chief told reporters in Karachi as he concluded his field visits to Sindh and Balochistan.

While he had been struck by the “unquantifiable depths of human suffering” he had witnessed, he stressed that he had also seen “great heights of human endurance and heroism – from emergency workers to ordinary people helping their neighbors.”

Earlier on Saturday Guterres traveled from Islamabad to Sukkur in Sindh by plane, accompanied by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. His visit ended in Karachi on Saturday evening, where he held a joint press conference with the Foreign Minister at the airport.

Speaking on the tarmac, they were flanked by a freshly arrived aid shipment from the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, that will be heading to help the affected communities.

The Secretary-General paid tribute to the massive response efforts of the Pakistani authorities – civilian and military, national and regional.

He added: “I also want to thank the civil society, humanitarian organizations, and my UN colleagues who have rushed in. I also want to take profit to thank all those donors who have started to support Pakistan in this terrible hour.”

The needs are enormous, and that’s why “I urge massive and urgent financial support for Pakistan. And this is not just a question of solidarity or generosity. It is a question of justice.”

Foreign Minister Bilawal thanked the Secretary-General, saying that the UN chief had visited “Pakistan in our time of difficulty and witnessed first-hand the devastation that has been caused by the catastrophic monsoon rains that we faced for many months.”
