Walmart cuts corporate staff after reducing forecast

Walmart cuts corporate staff
  • Walmart is the largest private employer in the United States, employing close to 1.6 million people.
  • The company reduced its outlook for quarterly and full-year profit guidance on July 25.
  • Walmart will announce its quarterly earnings on August 16.

Walmart acknowledged on Wednesday that it has started laying off corporate staff. This news comes around a week after the company lowered its forecast for profits and warned that shoppers have cut back on discretionary spending as a result of inflation.

The retail behemoth gave the explanation that they were carrying out the layoffs in order to “better position the firm for a prosperous future.”

Anne Hatfield, a representative for Walmart, declined to comment when asked how many employees will be impacted or which departments have been affected by the layoffs. She stated that Walmart is still hiring for positions in areas of its business that are expanding, such as its supply chain, e-commerce, health and wellness, and advertising sales departments.

“Consumers are becoming more diverse. The customer base is evolving,” she explained. “In order to ensure that we are on the same page, we have begun the process of restructuring.”

Walmart is the largest private employer in the United States, employing close to 1.6 million people across the country. When the corporation reduced its outlook for quarterly and full-year profit guidance on July 25, it worried investors because the company is considered to be a barometer for the economy of the nation.

This warning had a chilling effect on the retail sector, pulling down the stocks of businesses such as Macy’s and Amazon and sending up a flare about the health of the American consumer in the process.

Walmart reported at the time that customers were avoiding high-margin products such as clothes because they were spending more money on necessities such as groceries and fuel.

It stated that it would need to lower prices in order to sell more of those things, particularly given the surplus of inventory that had piled up in its stores as well as those of competitors such as Target and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Later on, during the same week, Best Buy reduced its profit and sales prediction, stating that it was experiencing weaker demand for consumer electronics, which are large, discretionary purchases that some customers can choose to delay making.

Concerns about another economic downturn have contributed to a fragmentation of the job market in the United States.

Even though the number of job opportunities in the United States fell significantly in June, the labor market is still quite competitive with 1.8 available jobs for every worker.

Many of the businesses that experienced rapid growth during the pandemic, including Amazon, one of Walmart’s most significant competitors, have begun to cut back on employment.

At the end of the second quarter, Amazon had a total of 1.52 million employees worldwide, 99,000 less than at the beginning of the quarter.

During the height of the Covid health problem, the company had nearly increased the size of its workers in an effort to meet up with the rising demand of online customers for groceries, puzzles, and other goods.

According to comments made by Amazon Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky during a call with reporters following the release of the company’s earnings report for the second quarter last week, the reduction was mostly the result of attrition.

A number of other businesses, such as Shopify and Robinhood, have also later stated that they will be doing layoffs.

And still others, such as the parent company of Facebook, Meta, and the parent company of Google, Alphabet, have stated that they will either slow hiring or focus on increasing productivity with the staff they now have.

It is not apparent whether Walmart has also slowed down its rate of hiring employees at its stores and warehouses, which would allow attrition to reduce the size of its workforce.

On August 16, the company will announce its quarterly earnings and is likely going to provide an update on the overall headcount at that time as well.

Prince William ban on Diana’s Panorama interview ‘silences’

Prince William
  • TV presenter Judy Finnigan made the claim in her latest piece for Express UK.
  • She said he saw a stairway to heaven when he met Meghan.
  • She quickly realised that the Royal Family would not support her grand vision of a world-conquering “brand”.

Prince William’s decision to ban Princess Diana’s explosive 1995 Panorama interview will ‘silence’ her voice once more.

In his column for News, Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie stated that the late Princess of Wales is being silenced once again by the Duke of Cambridge and ‘the Firm.’

“Princess Diana rarely got the chance to tell her own story,” He commented on Diana’s willingness to participate in the interview.

“Three years later…Diana chose to speak out herself, finally opening up to BBC’s Panorama. It was raw, real and the most watched interview of all time in UK history,” he added.

“Diana’s decision to do a televised sit-down was rooted in a deep desire to be heard and finally dispel many of the false narratives told in the press,” he stated.

“Without being able to hear Diana’s own words again, I fear we may be about to enter what could potentially lead to the slow rewriting of her life,” he wrote.

“Diana fought for much of her royal life to share her side of the story and be better understood.

“She put everything on the line, and her braveness has inspired millions around the world. Sadly now, her voice has been silenced once again,” he said.

They further disclosed that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had already taken action in this regard.

The Finance Ministry plans to collect these additional taxes to pay Pakistan State Oil (PSO). There have been widespread worries lately that PSO may go into default because to increasing overseas payments.

The government has also decided to give small businesses a tax break on their electricity expenses, according to FBR sources.

More taxes would be implemented in order to lessen the effect of this tax reduction on the goal of revenue collection.

Due to overwhelming criticism from the business community, according to Finance Minister Mifath Ismail, the government would exempt small merchants using less than 150 units from paying taxes on their electricity bills.

Dollar falls opposed to Rupee for fifth session

Rupee recovers against dollar on IMF loan approval
  • The Pakistani rupee appreciated versus the US dollar in the interbank market on Thursday.
  • The rupee gained 2.65 or 1.17 percent, falling from Wednesday’s close of Rs228.80 to 226.15.
  • The dollar dropped by 9.8 or 4.19 percent the previous day.

For the fifth session in a row, the Pakistani rupee appreciated versus the US dollar in the interbank market on Thursday.

In comparison to the dollar, the rupee gained 2.65 or 1.17 percent, falling from Wednesday’s close of Rs228.80 to 226.15. The dollar dropped by 9.8 or 4.19 percent the previous day, which led to a substantial increase in the rupee.

Malik Bostan, the chairman of the Exchange Companies Association of Pakistan (ECAP), said that the previous administration’s promises would take time to fulfill.

However, this time, just a few days after Finance Minister Miftah Ismail stated that Pakistan’s import bill would decrease, it actually decreased by $2 billion.

According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), imports have decreased by 38.3 percent over the past month as a result of the government’s decision to ban a variety of luxury goods in order to address the country’s cash deficit.

The decline in imports was accompanied by a decline in exports as well. The trade deficit decreased by 18.3% to $2.64 billion in July 2022 from $3.235 billion in July 2021, easing pressure on the currency. The shortfall was $4.96 billion in June 2022.

In addition, to hastily revive the IMF loan scheme, Chief of Staff Army (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa recently called US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.

Bostan claimed that immediately after this, the lender declared in a statement that Pakistan had met all requirements for the combined seventh and eighth reviews of the Extended Fund Facility, demonstrating the importance of the army chief’s call.

A board meeting is provisionally scheduled for late August after sufficient finance assurances are secured, according to a statement released on Tuesday by Esther Perez Ruiz, the IMF’s Resident Representative for Pakistan.

The dollar could drop to 180–190 against the Pakistani rupee if the IMF distributes the $1.2 billion later in August, according to Bostan, who also predicted that records will continue to be broken.

“This was the dollar’s actual value. The dollar wasn’t at such highs prior to the nation’s political unrest and the Punjab by-elections, which upended everything, including the markets “said he.

Bostan noted that there had previously been concerns about whether the government would last or not, but following the Election Commission of Pakistan’s ruling on the PTI’s illegal funding, the coalition has chosen to petition the Supreme Court, signaling that it intends to remain in power.
